Happy Thursday, loves!
I am so excited to share the sweet, Ali Wren with you today for our Flourish Flock Feature! She is just a gem and the cutest, kindest gal!
I had the privilege of meeting her quickly back in January at the Influence Conference in Nashville, TN and am thankful we've stayed in touch! I recently told her about my dream of us having the opportunity to speak together to a group of women as we have the same passion + calling of sharing our stories!
Share where you currently live:
Share where you grew up:
Holland, Michigan (home of Tulip Time). I grew up going to Lake Michigan all summer long.
Share about your family/your job/living situation:
I am married to my college sweetheart, Adam. He is a writer and marathon runner, and pushes me to set goals and chase after my dreams. After teaching special education for nine years, I just finished my first year teaching first grade! When I’m not teaching, I like to connect with women in my community over coffee or a yummy allergy-free dinner.
Share your favorite book and/or podcast:
It’s hard to choose one favorite book, but my top three favorites include: Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist, The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown, and Essentialism by Greg McKeown. I love The Road Back to You podcast with Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile.
Share your favorite quote and/or Bible verse:
“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be, and embracing who we are.” Brené Brown. My favorite Bible verse is 2 Timothy 1:7–For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and self-control.
Share your favorite beverage:
Americano with steamed almond milk.
Share one of the biggest losses you’ve experienced:
Over the last several years, I’ve been learning about ways to overcome the comparison trap in my life. A big loss I experienced in the thick of comparison was wasting so many years in worry and envy, constantly comparing my looks, talents, and timeline to everyone else’s, and seeing the places and ways I didn’t measure up.
Share some of the choices that have been most helpful in continuing to move you forward and supporting you while you are healing:
I have found these steps to be helpful when I feel tempted to compare: confession, surrender, gratitude check, speak truth, celebrate, stay in my own lane, and documenting memorial stone moments.
Share some ways you have tried to incorporate laughter and fun in the midst of the hurt:
Celebrating my friends and their successes, as well as my own. When it’s easy to view life through a lens of scarcity, celebration helps me see it through one of abundance.
Share how this experience has been instrumental in leading you to where you are today:
I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the life God has given me to live, and the story He’s giving me to tell. It has been an honor to share my journey and healing with others, to encourage them that there is a better and more whole way of life than comparison and competition.
Share any tips/advice/love for others who have gone through something similar:
You are enough, as you are. Whatever season you find yourself in, your story is beautiful and unique, handcrafted by God for a specific purpose.
